Introducing AVIF as a New MIME Type for Image Templates
We're thrilled to introduce the AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) as a new MIME type for our image templates. This update is part of our ongoing effort to incorporate the latest technology for enhanced performance.
What is AVIF?
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that uses the AV1 video codec for compression. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, delivering significantly smaller file sizes than traditional formats like JPEG and PNG — without sacrificing image quality.Benefits of AVIF:
- Enhanced Compression: AVIF delivers superior compression, reducing file sizes by up to 50% compared to JPEG, while maintaining high image quality.
- Improved Performance: Smaller file sizes mean faster page load times, improving Core Web Vitals scores and user experience — especially on content-rich websites.
- High-Quality Imaging: AVIF supports a wide color gamut, high dynamic range (HDR), and up to 12-bit color depth, making it ideal for photography, e-commerce visuals, and other high-fidelity digital content.

NOTE: While AVIF is broadly supported in modern browsers, older browsers and some devices may not render it natively. Always implement a fallback — such as serving JPEG or WebP — to ensure compatibility across all user environments.
