Add metadata to improve your search result

Metadata is most definitely one of the key element to classify and organise your assets in your QBank. The better your assets are tagged with metadata and the better search results you will get.

Adding relevant metadata is highly dependant on how organised your properties are and how well your organization is utilising these, there are a few rules of thumbs.

  • Have structured and organised properties
  • Have defined categories
  • Define which will be your most relevant metadata fields

How you tag your assets while uploading:

  1. Upload your asset (drag n drop or click upload)
  2. Choose the appropriate category
  3. Fill in as much metadata as possible
  4. Start Upload
  5. Approve media
  6. See media with updated metadata

What are the advantages of tagging

Now that we added metadata to our asset, we have increased the searchability drastically. For each added metadata information, we have a new way to search for our media. We could now search our media by looking for the keywords we've entered, in our example: "Fruit" and we would get the result using a simple Filter search in QBank

Note that we could also search for other properties (metadata fields) such as "Description" for example or classify our assets by "Photo types" to mention a few options from this example.

On the top of that, we may also use the powerful Freetext search function and type "Fruit" or "Fruittest" and we would also find our asset this way.

What is incorporated Metadata?

You can find incorporated metadata such as EXIF, XMP,  under the "Metadata" of a media when you are located in the detail view of your asset in QBank.

If you click on the little arrow, you'll be able to view the incorporated metadata that is within your file, the different metadata profiles that can be found, click on the profile that you are interested in, to view its properties.

Different kinds of  integrated metadata

There are different types of metadata attached to your images. Each contains particular information.

EXIF metadata: Each image or video carries incorporated metadata within itself. If you take a picture with your Smart phone for instance, you will have metadata that is located in the picture/video such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, camera model, date the photo was taken and much more. You can also include copyright information in your EXIF data when you register your camera through the manufacturer.

XMP metadata:
XMP stands for 'Extensible Metadata Platform'. XMP files store changes made to your image in post-processing. Adobe's Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is a file labeling technology that lets you embed metadata into files themselves during the content creation process.

You may know that Lightroom is a non-destructive editing program. Any changes you make are saved to a separate XMP file. Lightroom applies the changes to the image each time you open it.

The AI generated metadata feature

QBank offers ai generated metadata options such as "Detect text" or "Detect faces" for examples, which, when run on an image or a video, can implement a metadata field for you without being obliged to add it manually. This may come in handy if you are dealing with certain topic and you would like to find out a media that had a particular line of text that you were looking for.
